Abstract

Abstract : In this paper, with the trace addition of La element, the formation of LaB6 compounds suppresses the copoisoning effect in Al–Si alloys, which can be contributed to the possibility of reactions among the elements. The formation of LaB6 compounds maintains the effective quantity of Sr element that ensures the modification effect on eutectic Si phases. Based on the changes of mechanical properties, grain size and the undercooling for α-Al, it is believed that the particles of LaB6 compounds can be as the effective nucleation sites for α-Al. The finding of this work is useful for effectively neutralising the copoisoning effect between B and Sr elements.
