- Abstract : Ti-6Al-4V (wt-%) (Ti64) was oxidised in a controlled oxygen environment to produce highly anisotropic coaxial nanowires. A preference for nanowire growth to occur on the body centred cubic β phase of titanium in the mixed phase Ti64 alloy was observed. The preference for growth on β -Ti was exploited to vary the nanowire coverage by adjusting the Ti alloy microstructure by heat treatment before oxidation. The impact of oxygen concentration on the nanowire growth process was evaluated and found to be of key importance for nanowire production. The structure of individual nanowires was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and found to be coaxial heterostructures with a rutile-TiO2 core and a cladding of α -Al2 O3 .
