Abstract

Abstract : The selection of a water intake location is an important issue for its life time and running operation cost and hence it is indirectly affecting the final water unit price. Hydrodynamic conditions at the intake location are among the most important factors affecting the location selection besides construction techniques, planning considerations, environmental impacts and others. An existing water intake on the River Nile near Asyut, Egypt, is currently subjected to sedimentation problems causing operational drawbacks that require frequent dredging. In this article, a hydrodynamic model for the subject location was investigated through a number of alternative solutions to enhance its hydrodynamic conditions. A procedure was developed to compare between alternative solutions based on a multi-criteria analysis supported by the results of a hydrodynamic model for the subject area. The selected solution is the one that gives the highest weight based on the proposed multi-criteria procedure.
