- Graphical abstract: Tetrameric aluminum molecules with a Mitsubishi structure, composed of two cage-shaped triphenolic ligands, have been synthesized and characterized. Transmetalation from the cage-shaped borates was a proper method for the synthesis of these aluminum complexes. These aluminum complexes behaved as the Lewis acid catalyst for a hetero Diels–Alder reaction. Abstract: A new series of tetrameric aluminum molecules with a Mitsubishi structure, composed of two cage-shaped triphenolic ligands with a tripod-chelated structure, have been synthesized and characterized. Transmetalation from the cage-shaped borates was a proper method for the synthesis of these aluminum complexes. All complexes were determined via X-ray crystallography and NMR measurements. These Lewis acidic aluminum complexes catalyze the hetero Diels Alder reaction of the Danishefsky diene with benzaldehyde.
