Abstract

Abstract : Tissue engineering aims to repair the damaged tissue by transplantation of cells or introducing bioactive factors in a biocompatible scaffold. Abstract : Tissue engineering aims to repair the damaged tissue by transplantation of cells or introducing bioactive factors in a biocompatible scaffold. In recent years, biodegradable polymer scaffolds mimicking the extracellular matrix have been developed to promote the cell proliferation and extracellular matrix deposition. The biodegradable polymer scaffolds thus act as templates for tissue repair and regeneration. This article reviews the updated information regarding various types of natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers as well as their functions, physico-chemical properties, and degradation mechanisms in the development of biodegradable scaffolds for tissue engineering applications, including their combination with 3D printing.
