- Abstract: The key step in the synthesis of the entitled compounds (IV) is an extraordinary Wittig reaction of phenanthrene‐9, 10‐dione (I) and two equivalents of benzylidenetriphenylphosphoranes (II) followed by a dehydrogenation step using DDQ.
