Abstract : Systematic correlated characterization of the CVD‐grown 2D crystal flake's edge may lead to new physical insights into optical properties, particularly related to exciton phenomena. In the study by Özden et al. (pp.792–796 ), three different methods, i.e. µ‐Raman spectroscopy, steady‐state photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and time‐resolved fluorescence imaging (FLIM), are utilized for the grown structures of MoS2 layers. The FLIM method, which is widely used mainly for biological investigations, has been successfully employed for the characterization of 2D semiconductor structures. It is revealed that the existence of grain boundaries in the in‐contact flakes quenches the PL intensity and decreases the fluorescence lifetime at the boundary, while the interior of 2D grains demonstrate higher PL intensity and fluorescence lifetime. Furthermore, individual flakes, that have no physical contact with each other, exhibit higher PL intensity and lifetime at the edges. This could be important for applications where the edges play a key role, e.g. for hydrogen evolution catalysts. The results further demonstrate that even for perfect monolayer flakes or films there exists an optical heterogeneity, possibly due to stress or local compositional changes in the flakes.
