- Abstract : Localized surface plasmons (LSPs) of metallic nanoparticles have been studied for a long time; the fantastic resonance modes are strongly dependent on the shape, size and spatial configuration of nanoparticles. Electron energy loss spectra (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscopy is widely used to probe LSP modes. In this work, LSP modes of Ag nanocube and dimer were investigated in the frame of the discrete dipole approximation simulation. Compared with light excitation, electron‐driven method can provide complete information of LSP modes. We discuss the physical nature of these modes with the help of simulated E ‐field distributions and EELS intensity maps. For LSP modes of single nanoparticle and transverse coupling modes, EELS intensity maps reveal distributions of the electric field well. However, hot spots are missing in the EELS intensity map of longitudinal coupling modes. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
