Abstract : J. Kent Leach and co‐workers investigate the inhibition of apoptosis and promotion of survival and osteogenesis of human mesenchymal stem cells when entrapped in a photocrosslinkable alginate hydrogel on page 2501. The images show the gelation of BMP‐2 in alginate with mesenchymal stem cells to be implanted in a segmental defect. In vitro studies demonstrate improved survival of cells when stimulated with BMP‐2, translating to improved bone healing in vivo (as shown by microCT).
