- Abstract : Objective: Grave's disease is a common thyroid disorder that affects the cardiovascular system by causing increases in heart rate and cardiac output and decreases in peripheral resistance. Despite the fact that hyperthyroidism is a known cause of hypertension, blood pressure changes after thyrostatic therapy are not well known. The aim of the present study was to investigate changes in blood pressure and echocardiographic parameters in patients with Grave's disease before and after 6 months thyrostatic therapy. Design and method: Full echocardiographic assessment at diagnosis and after 6 months of thyroid suppression therapy were performed in 44 patients with Grave's Disease (29 men, 24 women), aged 37.6 ± 9.1 years. Additionally, 43 age and gender matched, euthyroid controls were studied. Blood pressure measurements were conducted according to international guidelines. Results: At the beginning of the study, both groups had comparable systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressures (SBP, DBP and MBP). Patients however had higher pulse pressure (PP) 55.9 ± 18.3 vs 62.8 ± 13.2 mmHg. Repeated measures analysis showed that all blood pressure changes were comparable in the two groups at the end of the study. Differences in SBP (δSBP) were significantly associated with the left ventrical (LV) volume and with longitudinal strain rate at the isovolumetric relaxation time (SRIVRT). Respectively, changes in PP were correlated with the aforementioned indices as well as withAbstract : Objective: Grave's disease is a common thyroid disorder that affects the cardiovascular system by causing increases in heart rate and cardiac output and decreases in peripheral resistance. Respectively, changes in PP were correlated with the aforementioned indices as well as with changes in left ventricular end-systoslic diameter (LVESD). Conclusions: These results indicate that Grave's disease patients had higher PP compared to euthyroid controls. Moreover, changes in BP correlate with changes in echocardiographic parameters. … (more)
