Abstract

Abstract : Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationship of serum uric acid levels (SUA), in hypertensive patients treated or not, with blood clotting factors. Design and method: We studied 1038 hypertensive patients (45.9% men) treated or newly diagnosed untreated (mean age 57.6 y, mean systolic/diastolic blood pressure: 148.4/91.8 mmHg, mean heart rate 75 beats per minute, mean body mass index (BMI): 28.2 kg/m 2 ). In the aforementioned patients blood clotting factors were measured, such as fibrinogen, antithrombin III (ATIII), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), serum homocysteine (Hcys), and SUA levels. Values obtained, were interrelated with Pearson correlation. Results: Figure. No caption available. Conclusions: Serum uric acid levels correlate significantly with blood clotting factors in hypertensive patients, possibly suggesting a prothrombotic effect of SUA in those patients.
