- Abstract: Phytochemicals are considered as one of the alternative controls for vector population. Methanolic plant extracts of Gluta renghas and Mangifera indica from family Anacardiaceae effectiveness were evaluated under field trial on oviposition of the dengue vector, Aedes mosquitoes. Aedes eggs laid on the hardboard paddles were counted weekly to estimate the effects of treatments. Number of eggs during the dry season were effectively reduced in all the plant treatments, however no significant differences was detected between treatments ( F = 0.456, df = 5, p = 0.809). During the wet season, abate showed significantly better control of Aedes population as compared to plant extracts ( F = 17.021, df = 5, p = 0.000). The effectiveness of plant extracts during dry seasons were mostly correlated to the humidity, but not related to the rainfall. Whereas, during the wet season in shaded areas, treatments were influenced by the rainfall. This study concluded that plant extracts, especially Gl. renghas are performing better in controlling Aedes populations in dry season and comparable to temephos (Abate) indicates the potential of these plant extracts to be used as bio-pesticide. These results will help to initiate the insight of new botanical pesticides for the low-cost and eco-friendly alternate method to control dengue problem in Malaysia.
