- Abstract: In this study, the structural and optical properties of GeO2 -PbO-MgO-MgF2 transparent germanate glass-ceramics obtained by controlled heat-treatment process have been investigated. In this regards, 85GeO2 -15PbO, 75GeO2 -15PbO-10MgF2 and 65GeO2- 15PbO-10MgF2 -10MgO glassy samples were prepared by conventional melt quenching technique. The prepared specimens were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The fundamental absorption edge for all samples was also analyzed in terms of the theory proposed by Davis and Mott. The results demonstrated that the addition of MgO and MgF2 to 85GeO2 -15PbO system have negligible effects on the optical properties of this glass. The glassy phase in 65GeO2 -15PbO-10MgF2 -10MgO system exhibits one-stage crystallization on heating, by transforming into crystalline MgGeO3 and Pb5 GeO7 phases. Despite the deleterious effects of Pb5 GeO7 phase on optical properties of GeO2 -PbO glasses, the precipitation of MgGeO3 phase in GeO2 -PbO-MgF2 -MgO system has negligible effects on optical properties of prepared glass-ceramics.
