Abstract

Abstract: This article examines the roles of German scholarship in Spanish writing about the Philippines in the two decades following the 1868 Glorious Revolution in Spain. Several Spanish authors used references to German scholars to enhance the credibility of their writings about the Southeast Asian colony. Others also recognized Germany as a national rival that threatened Spanish interests in the Philippines. Both positions ultimately reinforced Spain's grip on the colony and demonstrate the ambivalent nature of incorporating foreign scholarship into a country's imperialist projects. This history further illustrates the growth of science in Spain and attempts to keep its remaining colonies following the loss of the majority of the American possessions earlier in the century.
