- Resumen: Este artículo examina la historia del Archipiélago de Chiloé del sur de Chile. Se enfatizan los cambios económicos de los últimos cuarenta años, en particular el cambio del trabajo rural de subsistencia al trabajo asalariado, y el impacto que éste ha tenido en cómo los isleños hablan de sí mismos y de su cultura. El argumento de este artículo está enmarcado en la literatura de identidad, sugiriendo una aproximación conceptual de identidad que incorpora los elementos del esencialismo y del constructivismo.
