Abstract

Abstract : Outbreaks of hepatitis E virus (HEV) are typically associated with contaminated drinking water. A recent HEV outbreak (2012–14) in South Sudan affected ≥10 000 people. This study evaluated different water matrices and food during the last phase of the outbreak by analyzing HEV and human adenovirus (HAdV) as viral indicator of human contamination. The results revealed that the water sources analyzed were negative and that only household samples presented HAdV contamination, identifying a possible route of viral transmission within the population. Abstract : An environmental investigation at the end of an outbreak of hepatitis E virus (HEV) during the dry season in north South Sudan analyzed HEV and Human Adenovirus (HAdV) in surface and groundwater, household water and food samples. HAdV contamination was observed at the household level both in water and food samples.
