Abstract

Abstract: Ground-improvement techniques by deep soil vibration have been broadly used in port facilities, aiming to create stable platforms with suitable characteristics for container storage and equipment operation. The Lomé Container Terminal is a deep water port located on the western African coastline. Upper frictional soils were found to be inadequate to receive the design imposed loads and therefore vibrocompaction works were carried out to improve soil characteristics. Preliminary field tests, mainly supported by CPT tests, were undertaken to check the feasibility of the preconized ground improvement solution and determine the adequate vibrocompaction execution parameters. The paper describes the design criteria adopted for the vibrocompaction works according to the preliminary field test results undertaken at the site.
