Abstract

ABSTRACT: Violent extremist propaganda is embedded within layers of data that can be used by intelligence agencies. Each layer requires an applicable propaganda analysis method to identify and extract the data. A propaganda analysis typology classifies these methods by several characteristics. This paper examines the methodological divergences and convergences of five propaganda analysis typologies: dissemination, informative, communicative, frames and emotions. Each typology is identified by the type of data and the unit of analysis in a comparative framework. This paper is divided into three sections. The first section sets the context of propaganda analysis via a historical overview since the Second World War. The second section defines a propaganda typology through purpose, method and outcome. The third section argues that complete intelligence is achieved through a propaganda analysis nexus where the five approaches converge to achieve actionable intelligence and effective counter propaganda measures.
