- Abstract:
- Abstract : An expression adopted only in the early nineteenth century, the Consensus Tigurinus (or Zurich Agreement), referred to a joint statement on sacramental doctrine concluded in May 1549 between Heinrich Bullinger and Jean Calvin after much correspondence and personal conversation. The purpose of this essay is threefold: to review Bullinger's and Calvin's convictions concerning the nature of the Eucharist before and during the laborious negotiations; to examine the theological content of the agreement; and to trace the impact of the Consensus Tigurinus on inter-confessional relations in the late sixteenth century and beyond.
