Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article offers a chronological discussion of the history of the Egypt's largest militant Islamist movements, al-Jamā'a al-Islāmiyya (The Islamic Group or the IG) and al-Jihād Organization who renounced violence and started to argue against the jihadi ideology worldwide. It provides an account of the contextual structural process that has influenced their activities and briefly answers the question: What is the context that led the IG and al-Jihād to practice violence and then retract it? To do so, the article employs the political process approach to highlight the political environment, mobilizing structures and ideological framework of both groups both before and after revisions. To achieve this purpose, the article divided the history of the two groups into six stages, highlighting the general features of each stage from establishment and violence until revisions and participation in political life.
