- Abstract : Synthesis of silica nanoparticles from three varieties of rice hulls, namely Ponni, IR-20, and CO-36, collected from five districts of Tamil Nadu, India, has been reported. Silica nanoparticles were synthesized using facile thermal decomposition method at 750°C in a muffle furnace for 3 h under controlled oxygen atmosphere. The result of an X-ray diffraction study showed that the obtained silica nanoparticles were in amorphous phase. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy methods were used to examine the morphology and microstructure of silica particles. The chemical and elemental compositions of the obtained silica nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively.
