- Highlights: A 'hybrid' numerical scour model for mono-pile foundation is developed. The ability of using Shields parameter evolution to predict scour depth is demonstrated. A Torczon optimization algorithm to determine scour depth quickly is utilized. The model is suitable for application as a practical scour assessment tool. Abstract: In this work, we propose a first approximation approach to obtain the equilibrium scour depth around a mono-pile using a numerical scour model. This is achieved by modelling the turbulent flow around the cylindrical pile to obtain the bed parameters driving the sediment motion. Using the bed parameters obtained and a Torczon optimization algorithm, the simulation model attempts to deform the bed boundary towards the equilibrium scour depth in the shortest path possible. The predicted scour depth from simulations using this approach correlated reasonably well with experimental observations.
