Abstract

Highlights: Postprandial hypotension is defined as fall in BP ≥ 20 mmHg post-meal. It is common in diabetes, often with serious consequences. Gastric emptying varies widely (1–4 kcal/min) impacting duodenal nutrient delivery. The fall in BP is greater at duodenal rate of 4 kcal/min in diabetes. Slowing gastric emptying may help in management of postprandial hypotension. Abstract: Postprandial hypotension occurs frequently in diabetes. We show in 9 type 2 patients, that the fall in systolic blood pressure is greater in response to intraduodenal glucose infused at 4 kcal/min than 2 kcal/min, implying that strategies to slow gastric emptying may be effective in the management of postprandial hypotension.
