Abstract

Abstract : Scholars from many fields have been writing about homosexual interpretations of Batman for more than 60 years. This research investigates the relationship between scholarly writing on the subject and the comics, films and other media that make up the Batman franchise. The analysis is done through the lens of a bibliographic citation analysis. The goal is to investigate which portions of the franchise influence discussion most and better understand how authors approached the subject from a research perspective. The results revealed that the writing on the topic is focused on a very small subset of materials, and materials reprinted in a few bound editions played an oversized role. It was also discovered that this phenomenon is largely about comics. Authors did not figure newer media forms such as animation and videogames into their writing. Other trends were discovered, such as a move towards better citation in scholarly writing in more recent work, and evidence was discovered that points towards a relationship between the accessibility of material and its influence.
