Abstract

Abstract: Neuromuscular complications and impaired physical function are common in survivors of critical illness. Furthermore, these complications are frequently severe and persistent, contributing to functional decline and significant decrements in health-related quality of life and reduced long term survival. The term intensive care unit acquired weakness (ICUAW) has been suggested as a broad clinical term for the onset of acute, bilateral, neuromuscular impairment in the critically ill for which there is no plausible aetiology other than critical illness. Recently, there has been growing recognition that both critical illness and its associated treatments are toxic to muscles and nerves and contribute to the development of ICUAW. Unfortunately, there are limited interventions to prevent or treat ICUAW. Minimization and/or early interruption of sedation with mobilization and rehabilitation, nutritional supplementation, and hormonal manipulation represent candidate interventions for evaluation as potential therapeutic targets.
