- Graphical abstract: In this study, 2D → 3D polycatenated and 3D coordination polymers have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions with different heteroatom containing dicarboylic acids. Different anionic linkers play a crucial role in the dimensionality and topology of synthesized CPs. Complexes display blue luminescence emissions. Abstract: The self-assembly of cadmium(II) ions with bis(1, 2, 4-triazole) ligand afford two new coordination polymers based on different heterocyclic dicarboxylates, namely, [Cd(μ-fdc)(μ-pbtx)(H2 O)] n (1 ) and [Cd2 (μ3 -tdc)2 (μ-pbtx)2 (H2 O)2 ] n (2 ) where H2 fdc = furan-2, 5-dicarboxylic acid, H2 tdc = thiophene-2, 5-dicarboxylic acid, pbtx = 1, 4-bis[(1H-1, 2, 4-triazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene. The coordination polymers have been prepared by the hydrothermal method and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The anionic linkers play important roles in modulating the formation of the coordination polymers. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that complex1 possesses a uninodal 4-connected two-dimensional (2D) → 3D polycatenated framework based on inclined 2D 4 4 -sql grids. When the O-containing fdc is replaced by S-containing tdc ligand, a uninodal 8-connected three-dimensional (3D) framework of2 with rare cco-8-Pbcm (3 6 .4 14 .5 7 .6) topology is obtained under the same reaction conditions.
