- Abstract: Recently, the authors have worked on the surface modification by a rubbing technique to improve wear resistance. In this method, hard particles are embedded into a bulk material by friction. The bulk material embedded with hard particles is expected to possess excellent wear resistance. In this research, an aluminum alloy (duralumin) and tungsten carbide (WC) were employed as the bulk material and the hard particles, respectively. Fretting tests were performed in both dry and oil-lubricated conditions. From the results, it was found that this method can improve the fretting wear properties. Highlights: Surface modification by a rubbing technique can improve the fretting wear properties of aluminum alloy. The modified material possesses the excellent fretting wear resistance in oil-lubricated condition. In the oil-lubricated condition, lubricating oil is easy to supply into the contacting surfaces due to the asperities and micro-holes generated by the surface modification.
