- ABSTRACT: In recent years, many quantum dot (QD)-based sensing systems have been developed and expanded into intracellular analytical applications. In this review, recent reports on the intracellular sensing of QDs are reviewed, with special emphasis on the relation between QDs' intrinsic properties and their analytical activities in various cells. First, the general synthetic routes and the representative surface modification methods of different types of QDs are discussed. The effects of QDs' structural and component characteristics on the cytotoxicity and the cellar uptake ways are then described in detail. We highlight recent advances in the sensing strategies and illustrate analytical applications in living cells. Finally, we discuss some critical challenges and future trends of the intracellular sensor development.
