- Abstract : This paper examines the effects of modifying the surface of silk fabric by oxygen plasma treatment on its dyeability. Both raw and degummed silk fabrics were plasma treated. The effects of oxygen flow rate, exposure time, and jet‐to‐substrate distance were determined. All plasma‐treated and untreated raw and degummed silk fabrics were tested, and the effect of plasma treatment on dyeability was evaluated. Dyeability was analysed in terms of reflectance curve, K / S value, and CIE L * a * b * values. Experimental results revealed that oxygen plasma treatment could improve the dye absorption of silk fabrics. Surface analysis based on scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the silk fibre surface was affected physically and chemically by plasma treatment.
