- Abstract : Urban densification and mixed‐use development may have unintended consequences and should be informed by research that anticipates their varied outcomes. The purpose of this study is to understand the association between sleep duration/problems and different land use types (commercial, residential, industrial, green space), and to further explore the role of traffic and noise as potential mechanisms for how land use can impact sleep. Using multilevel logistic and multinomial logistic regressions, we analyzed the association between land use and sleep duration/problems for a cross‐sectional sample of 2411 participants across 443 dissemination areas in Toronto, Canada. We found positive associations between sleep problems/duration and commercial density, residential density, and industrial land use. However, these associations were fully attenuated once we controlled for traffic levels and self‐rated noise, which suggests that land use was associated with elevated levels of noise and traffic, which in turn negatively impacted sleep. Density of green space was not independently associated with sleep duration/problems. Given the importance of noise and traffic as mediators between land use and sleep duration/problems, further research should evaluate whether site‐planning and architectural solutions to reduce exterior noise and exposure to traffic can ameliorate these potentially negative effects of certain land uses. Les effets de l'occupation du sol en milieu urbain sur la durée et les troubles du: sommeil La densification urbaine et les projets d'aménagement à usage mixte ont parfois des conséquences imprévues et devraient être éclairés par des recherches fondées sur leurs multiples effets. Cette étude vise à faire la lumière sur l'association entre la durée/les troubles du sommeil et les différents types d'occupation du sol (commercial, résidentiel, industriel, espace vert), et d'examiner plus en détail le rôle de la circulation et du bruit comme mécanisme par lequel l'occupation du sol peut influencer le sommeil. À l'aide de modèles de régression logistique multiniveau et multinomiale, une analyse a été menée sur l'association entre l'occupation du sol et la durée/les troubles du sommeil à partir d'un échantillon transversal de 2 411 participants qui résident dans 443 aires de diffusion à Toronto, Canada. Des associations positives ont été trouvées entre la durée/les troubles du sommeil et la densité commerciale, la densité résidentielle, et l'occupation du sol à des fins industrielles. Cependant, ces associations sont remises en cause quand les effets des niveaux de trafic et du bruit autoévalué ont été contrôlés, ce qui semble indiquer qu'une association existe entre l'occupation du sol et les niveaux élevés de bruit et de trafic, lesquels ont à leur tour un impact négatif sur le sommeil. La densité de l'espace vert n'est pas associée de manière indépendante avec la durée/les troubles du sommeil. Compte tenu de l'importance du bruit et de la circulation en tant qu'intermédiaires entre l'occupation du sol et la durée/les troubles du sommeil, les travaux futurs devraient évaluer si l'aménagement des sites et les solutions architecturales pour réduire le bruit extérieur et l'exposition à la circulation peuvent contrer ces effets potentiellement négatifs de certains types d'occupation du sol. … (more)
