- Abstract : The impact response of carbon fibre-metal laminates under varying ambient temperature ( T a = 20, 100, 150, 200°C) is simulated by ABAQUS/Explicit based user material subroutine VUMAT. The effects of thermal load on the impact resistance of carbon fibre-metal laminates are investigated. Results show that the thermal stress would directly influence the contact resistance force. The max contact force decreases with the increase of T a when T a falls in the range from 100 to 200°C. With the increase of T a, the residual velocity of bullet increases, and the time of the penetration decreases. The plastic deformation in the steel layer plays significant roles in dissipating the impact energy in the carbon fibre-metal laminates. The thermal load weakens the kinetic energy absorbing performance of carbon fibre-steel laminates, which significantly reduces the ballistic property of the fibre-metal laminate.
