<abstract xml:lang="en" abstract-type="graphical" id="ab005"> <title id="st160">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="sp0005"> <list id="l0005"> <list-item id="o0005"> <label></label> <p id="p0250">We reviewed four decades of literature on obstetric failed tracheal intubation.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="o0010"> <label></label> <p id="p0255">At caesarean, the failure to intubate rate is 1 per 443, 1 death per 44 100 general anaesthetics.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="o0015"> <label></label> <p id="p0260">The proportion of cases where general anaesthesia was continued has increased.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="o0020"> <label></label> <p id="p0265">The laryngeal mask is the preferred supraglottic device for continuing anaesthesia.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="o0025"> <label></label> <p id="p0270">Failed intubation contributes but is not the sole reason for poor neonatal outcome.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
