Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en" id="cam4496-abs-0002"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>Persistent infection with carcinogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) is a necessary cause for development of cervical cancer. The implication of chlamydia in the pathogenesis of cervical carcinoma is controversial, as its interference has not been demonstrated at a particular stage of the carcinogenic process. In this study, which examined data on 1982 young women, results show a significantly increase incidence of HPV infections in the presence of chlamydia co‐infection and hint at an association between chlamydia and the persistence of normally fast‐clearing HPV genotypes. <boxed-text content-type="graphic" id="cam4496-blkfxd-0001" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"><graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgkfmw4hhs" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></boxed-text></p> </abstract>
