<abstract abstract-type="author" id="abs0005"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <sec> <p id="spar0005">The <italic>WUS-RELATED HOMEOBOX 5</italic> (<italic>WOX5</italic>) gene is expressed in the quiescent center (QC) to regulate the columella stem cell (CSC) identity. Three recent reports not only show how <italic>WOX5</italic> is controlled but also highlight the key role of WOX5 in root stem cell niche maintenance.</p> </sec> </abstract>
