Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main" id="jppr1111-abs-0001"> <title>Abstract</title> <p id="jppr1111-para-0001">The role of the ambulance pharmacist has a surprisingly short history, yet offers enormous opportunities for ambulance services and for incumbents alike. Given the complexity and novelty of the pre‐hospital patient‐care environment, ambulance pharmacist position descriptions are only now beginning to be accurately described. Governance, including special emphasis on Schedule 4 and Schedule 8 medicines, and assuming accountability for medicine standards in an ambulance jurisdiction, are some of the roles performed. There are significant opportunities for interdisciplinary pre‐hospital patient care, teaching and research. Ambulance pharmacist positions now exist in three states of Australia and with a rapidly expanding private industry ambulance sector, it is envisaged that opportunities will also arise therein.</p> </abstract>
