<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">In oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, a few markers were proposed to identify the cancer stem cells in the tumour.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">Stem cell markers are associated with patient's prognosis, pathological stages, cancer recurrence and therapy resistance in ESCC.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">Finding new cancer stem cell targets could be used to decide treatment of patients with ESCC.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">Designing drugs to manipulate the known molecular targets in CSCs could improve the management of patients with ESCC.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
