- <abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en" id="admi201500248-abs-0001"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>The complex structure of the Salvinia molesta</bold> is investigated via rare event molecular dynamics simulations. Results show that a hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterning together with a re‐entrant geometry control the free energy barriers for bubble nucleation and for the Cassie–Wenzel transition. This natural paradigm is translated into simple macroscopic design criteria for engineering robust superhydrophobicity in submerged applications. <graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgj2rgpp06c" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></p> </abstract>
