<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en" id="adom201500153-abs-0001"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>A self‐assembly of microlenses on a curved interface</bold> can be obtained by pinning smectic liquid crystals around a micropillar with appropriate boundary conditions. This hierarchical structure of microlenses, with variable focal lengths from a few micrometers to a few tens of micrometers, is similar to an insect's compound eye; the lenses are reconfigurable with temperature and sensitive to light polarization. <graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgj2n0v1bj6" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></p> </abstract>
