<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">Teeth affected by dentinogenesis imperfect are investigated with polarised light microscopy and X-ray microtomography.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">Structures and mineral distributions are studied in three dimensions.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">Large tubules are seen corresponding to the original location of primary dentine.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">A network of vessels, or the remnants of vessels, is seen in the location of the original pulp chamber.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0025"> <label></label> <p id="par0025">Even after apparent complete obliteration of the pulp chamber, this network of vessels may provide a pathway for bacterial infection.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
