Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main"> <title>Abstract</title> <p>It is commonly perceived that computer aided engineering (CAE) tools have the potential of improving the quality of products and the time and cost performance of new product development (NPD) undertakings. Whilst the effect of CAE usage on NPD performance is the subject of numerous literature articles, the reasons for its failure to achieve the expected NPD improvements are seldom investigated. A gap in the theory thus exists as speculative reasons are provided where research has found statistically insignificant or negative correlation between NPD performance and CAE usage. The objective of this research was to determine if CAE tool usage has a greater positive impact on NPD performance when combined with talent management initiatives, since talent development presents itself as a possible enabler to realise the potential CAE performance gains. An exploratory multiple case study research strategy was followed where semi‐structured interviews were conducted with individuals at three NPD companies. The results show that satisfying talent requirements is indeed an enabling factor to gain advantage from CAE tools, and talent requirements of NPD managers and engineers are identified.</p> </abstract>
