<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0010"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">The ultrastructural organization of the spermatozoon of the digenean <italic>Lecithostaphylus retroflexus</italic> (Microphalloidea: Zoogonidae) was described.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0145">Indeed, alive digeneans were collected from <italic>Belone belone gracilis</italic> (Teleostei: Belonidae), caught from the Gulf of Gabès in Chebba (Tunisia).</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0150">The mature spermatozoon of <italic>L. retroflexus</italic> exhibits two axonemes of different lengths with the 9 + '1' Trepaxonematan pattern, a nucleus, two mitochondria, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules and granules of glycogen.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0155">Additionally, the spermatozoon of <italic>L. retroflexus</italic> shows type 2 of the external ornamentation of <xref id="crf0115" rid="bib0145">Quilichini et al. (2011)</xref>, spine-like bodies and a continuous and submembranous layer of parallel cortical microtubules surrounding the axonemes at their anterior end.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0025"> <label></label> <p id="par0160">Moreover, the morphology of the posterior spermatozoon extremity in <italic>L. retroflexus</italic> corresponds to the fasciolidean type of <xref id="crf0120" rid="bib0140">Quilichini et al.
