- <abstract abstract-type="author" id="ab0005"> <title id="st0005">Abstract</title> <sec> <p id="sp0005">A total of 1523 individuals of 34 species of chaetodontids from the Great Barrier Reef were examined for faustulid trematodes. Specimens resembling <italic>Paradiscogaster glebulae</italic> Bray, Cribb &amp; Barker, 1994 were found in nine chaetodontid species at three localities. These specimens are shown, on the basis of combined morphological and molecular analyses, to comprise a complex of morphologically similar and partly cryptic species. The complex may comprise as many as six distinct species of which three are resolved here. The true <italic>P</italic>. <italic>glebulae</italic> is identified in <italic>Chaetodon ornatissimus</italic> Cuvier, 1831, <italic>Chaetodon aureofasciatus</italic> Macleay, 1878, <italic>Chaetodon plebeius</italic> Cuvier, 1831, <italic>Chaetodon rainfordi</italic> McCulloch, 1923 and <italic>Chaetodon speculum</italic> Cuvier, 1831. Two new species are described, <italic>Paradiscogaster munozae</italic> n. sp. from <italic>Heniochus varius</italic> (Cuvier, 1829), <italic>Heniochus chrysostomus</italic> Cuvier, 1831 and <italic>Chaetodon citrinellus</italic> Cuvier, 1831 and <italic>Paradiscogaster melendezi</italic> n. sp. from <italic>Chaetodon kleinii</italic> Bloch, 1790. In terms of morphology the three species differ most clearly in the development of the appendages on the ventral sucker. The host-specificity of the three species differs strikingly. <italic>P. melendezi</italic> n. sp. infects just one fish species, <italic>P</italic>. <italic>glebulae</italic> infects species of only one clade of <italic>Chaetodon</italic>, and <italic>P</italic>. <italic>munozae</italic> n. sp. infects quite unrelated species. The basis of this unusual pattern of host-specificity requires further exploration. Two of the species recognised here, <italic>P. glebulae</italic> and <italic>P. munozae</italic> n. sp., showed apparent intra-individual variation in the ITS2 rDNA sequences as demonstrated by clear, replicated double peaks in the electropherograms.</p> </sec> </abstract> … (more)
