<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0010">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">Landscape-level feedbacks are critical for understanding of the risk of rapid switching between ecological states, such as forest and savanna biomes.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">These feedbacks are difficult to study because the spatial and temporal scales preclude classical experiment approaches.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">We suggest that identifying and understanding the role of landscape-level feedbacks demands a synthetic approach that blends observational, experimental, model-based approaches, conceptual models, and narratives.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
