<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">We evaluated the effectiveness of early versus delayed metformin in patients on changes in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and body-mass index (BMI).</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">Early treatment was associated with significantly larger decreases in HbA1c and BMI relative to delayed treatment.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">Patients receiving early treatment were more likely to achieve HbA1c goal of less than 7% (53 mmol/mol) and had a reduced risk of therapy augmentation.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
