Abstract

<abstract xml:lang="en" abstract-type="author" id="ab005"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <sec> <title id="st005">Introduction</title> <p id="sp005">Advancements of detection technology and treatment plan in early detection of head and neck cancer seems to remain an important factor for improving the survival rate of patients with head and neck cancers in which most of patients are diagnosed at a very late stage. Recent advancements in technology as well as molecular biology have improved the understanding of the molecular based mechanism of head and neck cancer progression and have led to identification and characterization of numerous biomarkers. Biomarkers of head and neck cancer are expected to play an important role in the early detection of primary and relapsed tumors.</p> </sec> <sec> <title id="st010">Materials and methods</title> <p id="sp010">In the present study, we focus on the recent discoveries as well as study conducted by our group on potential saliva based biomarkers for the early detection of head and neck cancer.</p> </sec> <sec> <title id="st015">Results and conclusions</title> <p id="sp015">Salivary interleukin-8 and 8 -OHdG showed good sensitivity, specificity, convenience, and standardization. So, large-scale clinical study is required to validate these two markers for detection of head and neck cancers.</p> </sec> </abstract>
