<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="ab0010"> <title id="st0010">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="sp0010"> <list id="ulist0010"> <list-item id="u0010"> <label></label> <p id="p0010">This study assessed evidence for efficacy of antibiotic treatment in canine and feline urinary tract infections (UTIs).</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0015"> <label></label> <p id="p0015">Of 14 peer-reviewed prospective and controlled studies identified, five were randomised controlled clinical trials.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0020"> <label></label> <p id="p0020">There is little evidence concerning antibiotic treatment of UTI in dogs and cats.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0030"> <label></label> <p id="p0030">No clinical studies examined the effect of duration of the same drug.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0035"> <label></label> <p id="p0035">Short duration treatment with trimethoprim-sulfonamide or enrofloxacin was supported by fair evidence, as these treatment strategies were non inferior to medium duration therapy with beta lactams in dogs with uncomplicated cystitis.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
