<abstract> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <sec> <title>Abstract</title> <p>As the rate of prosthetic joint replacement operations continues to increase, the incidence of early- or late-onset infection in the implanted joint will also likely rise. Most infections involve bacterial organisms constituting normal skin flora introduced into the surgical site at the time of the procedure or arrive hematogenously from another site of perioperative infection at some point in time weeks, months, or years later. Prosthetic joint infection due to <italic>Listeria monocytogenes</italic> is a rare event but may become more common as the size of the population having specific risk factors for infection associated with this pathogen grows.</p> </sec> </abstract>
