<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">We studied the effect of various thermal processing on the crystallization kinetics, crystallite microstructure, and strength of a lithium disilicate system.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">The growth of Li₂O–2SiO₂ crystals was independent of the overall heating time but dependent on a minimum temperature threshold.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">The lithium disilicate system formed three evolutionary stages through controlled devitrification via distinctive heating schedules.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">Each stage yielded a principal microstructure that possessed interesting, sometimes peculiar, combinations of glassy-crystalline properties.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0025"> <label></label> <p id="par0025">Groups heated above the minimum temperature threshold exhibited improved flexural strength, fracture toughness, and elastic modulus.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
