<abstract> <title> <x content-type="archive" xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>This paper provides an updated checklist of the Orthotrichaceae occurring in Malawi. Six species (<italic>Groutiella tomentosa</italic> (Hornsch.) Wijk &amp; Margad., <italic>Macromitrium soulae</italic> Renauld &amp; Cardot, <italic>Schlotheimia badiella</italic> Besch., <italic>Zygodon erosus</italic> Mitt., <italic>Zygodon intermedius</italic> Bruch &amp; Schimp. and <italic>Zygodon reinwardtii</italic> (Hornsch.) A.Braun <italic>in</italic> B.S.G.) are reported as new to Malawi. A key to these species is provided. Illustrations are included for the two poorly known species <italic>Macromitrium soulae</italic> and <italic>Schlotheimia badiella</italic>. In addition, <italic>Schlotheimia badiella</italic> is recorded new to Tanzania, <italic>Macromitrium sulcatum</italic> (Hook.) Brid. is recorded new to Burundi and <italic>Macromitrium serpens</italic> (Bruch <italic>ex</italic> Hook. &amp; Grev.) Brid. is removed from the Malawi checklist but reported as new to Kenya.</p> </abstract>
