<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">This is the first study to investigate diagnosis and management of dry eye between general practitioners and optometrists in the Netherlands.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">There is virtually no agreement for all questions with the exception that symptoms of 'burning' and 'irritation' of the eye and that dry eye is an age-related disease.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">The significant variance in diagnosis and management between practitioners may have a detrimental impact on the consistency of patient care.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">The development of management pathways and co-management is likely to reduce the significant burden of dry eye management to the Dutch healthcare system.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
